Winter — Dec to Feb

Winter Itinerary in Taiwan — 8-Day Route

Taiwan winter is mild and dry in the south, cool and occasionally rainy in the north. It's peak season for hot springs, temple festivals, and exploring southern Taiwan without the summer heat. Lunar New Year (late January or February) transforms the island — temples overflow, families reunite, and fireworks fill every night sky.

Best of Winter Taiwan

Hot springs (Beitou, Wulai, Jiaoxi), crisp mountain air at Alishan, comfortable south Taiwan weather (22–26°C), Lunar New Year festivals, Hehuanshan snow, fewer tourists

Winter Challenges

North Taiwan rain (pack a light waterproof), 10–16°C in Taipei, some east coast trains booked solid during Lunar New Year, Hehuanshan roads can close after heavy snow

Winter tip: Pack layers — a fleece or light jacket for Taipei evenings, a warmer layer for mountain areas. South of Tainan stays short-sleeve warm all winter. If visiting during Lunar New Year, book all trains and accommodation 4–6 weeks in advance.
1
Tainan
Fly Into Kaohsiung — Head to Tainan
Fly into Kaohsiung (KHH) and take a short train to Tainan. Winter is the best time to visit Taiwan's south — sunny, dry, and around 24°C. Start at Anping Fort and walk the old waterway district. End the evening at the Tainan flower market, a winter-only institution open on late-night weekend evenings.
KHH ArrivalAnping FortTainan Old City
2
Tainan
Tainan Temple Trail + Food Day
Tainan has over 300 temples per square kilometre — winter is peak pilgrimage season. Visit Koxinga Shrine, the Great Mazu Temple, and the colourful Wufei Temple. Between temples, eat your way through the city: coffin toast, milkfish congee, oyster fritters, and shrimp rolls. Tainan in winter has the warmest air and the richest food scene.

3
Alishan
Alishan — Sea of Clouds Above the Frost
Bus to Chiayi, then 2.5 hrs up to Alishan (2,200m). Winter is the best season for the famous Alishan cloud sea — cold overnight air causes thick fog to form in the valleys below, and you watch the sunrise emerge above a white ocean of clouds. Bring a heavy jacket (temperatures drop to 2–8°C at night). Walk among the 2,000-year-old red cypress trees — at their most atmospheric in winter mist.

4
Sun Moon Lake
Alishan Sunrise → Sun Moon Lake
Wake at 5am for the Alishan sunrise above the clouds. Then descend to Shuili and connect to Sun Moon Lake. Winter at the lake is magical — low-lying fog clings to the water surface in the mornings, and tourist crowds are at their annual low. Cycle the lake loop or kayak in the glassy winter water. Stay lakeside at a B&B.

Taipei
HSR to Taipei — City Exploration
High-Speed Rail from Taichung to Taipei (45 min). Afternoon at the Taipei 101 observatory — winter skies are often clearer than summer haze. Walk Yongkang Street for hot soup dumplings (xiaolongbao) and sesame noodles. Evening at Ningxia Night Market — smaller, more local, ideal for winter comfort food like oyster vermicelli and pork rib soup.

6
Beitou / Wulai
Hot Springs Day — Beitou or Wulai
The best day of a Taiwan winter trip. Take the MRT to Beitou (30 min from central Taipei) to soak in geothermal hot spring pools surrounded by steam and mountain trees — temperatures outside 10°C, inside the pools 40°C. The public Millennium Hot Spring is only $3. Alternatively, Wulai (45 min south of Taipei by bus) offers indigenous Atayal culture, a waterfall, and private hot spring rooms in a forested gorge.

7
Jiaoxi / Northeast Coast
Jiaoxi Hot Springs + Jiufen
Take the train to Jiaoxi (50 min) — a small hot spring town known for its foot baths and iron-rich waters. Soak in a public foot spring right outside the station for free. Afternoon bus to Jiufen — in winter, the teahouses are warm, the crowds are gone, and the mist-wrapped hillside looks like the opening scene of Spirited Away. Stay for the lantern-lit evening before returning to Taipei.

Taipei → Fly Home
Final Morning — CKS Memorial + Depart
Morning walk through the CKS Memorial Hall and Liberty Square — stunning in winter without summer humidity. Final lunch of beef noodle soup or braised pork rice at a local spot near Zhongzheng. Head to Taoyuan Airport (TPE) for your flight home. Taiwan in winter is quiet, warm-hearted, and deeply underrated.
CKS MemorialBeef Noodle SoupTPE Airport
Lunar New Year planning: If your trip overlaps with Lunar New Year (late January or February), book everything — trains, accommodation, and major attraction tickets — at least 6 weeks ahead. Avoid travelling on New Year's Eve and the first 2 days of the new year when transport is packed to capacity. The upside: temple festivities, fireworks at Taipei 101, and the Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival are once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

FAQ

Taiwan Trip Planning — Common Questions

Do I need to book trains in advance? +
Yes for the popular express trains (Puyuma, Taroko Express, Tze-Chiang) — especially the Taipei–Hualien route which sells out 2–3 weeks ahead on weekends. Book at the Taiwan Railways Administration website or at any train station. High-Speed Rail (HSR) between Taipei and Kaohsiung rarely sells out and can be booked same-day.
Is it easy to get around Taiwan without speaking Chinese? +
Yes. All MRT stations, HSR, and most buses have full English signage. Google Maps works perfectly in Taiwan and covers buses, trains, and walking routes. Most tourist attractions have English information. Young people in cities generally speak some English. A Taiwan eSIM keeps Google Maps working everywhere you go.
What's the best time of year to visit Taiwan? +
October to December is the sweet spot — mild temperatures (20–26°C), low humidity, low typhoon risk. March to May is also pleasant. June to September is typhoon season and very humid, but still popular. January to February is cool in the north (10–15°C) but fine in the south.
Is summer a good time to visit Taiwan? +
Summer (June–August) is great if you plan around the heat and typhoon risk. Start outdoor activities before 9am, take an air-conditioned break in the early afternoon, and resume in the evening. The east coast, Kenting beaches, and mountain areas like Taroko Gorge are best in summer. Download the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) Taiwan app to track typhoons — flights and trains are cancelled during direct hits, so keep your schedule flexible and have travel insurance.
Is winter a good time to visit Taiwan? +
Winter (December–February) is excellent, especially for southern Taiwan and mountain areas. Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Kenting stay warm (22–26°C) while northern Taiwan gets cool and occasionally rainy (10–16°C in Taipei). The hot springs in Beitou and Wulai are uniquely enjoyable when outdoor temperatures are low. Alishan's sea of clouds above the frost is a winter-only phenomenon. If visiting during Lunar New Year, book accommodation and trains 6 weeks in advance.
Should I rent a scooter or use public transport? +
Both. Public transport (MRT + HSR + trains + buses) covers all major cities and intercity travel efficiently. For remote areas like the east coast, Kenting, and mountain roads, a scooter gives you much more freedom. International driving permits are accepted — bring yours from home. Scooters rent for ~$10–15/day.
How much does a 10-day Taiwan trip cost? +
Budget travelers can manage on $50–70/day (hostel dorm + street food + public transport). Mid-range is $100–150/day (private room + restaurants + occasional taxi). High-end hotels and private tours push costs up significantly. Food is remarkably cheap — a full meal at a night market costs $2–4.
