14-Day Itinerary
Taiwan 14-Day Deep Dive Itinerary (2026): Full Island Route
Fourteen days is the magic number for seeing all of Taiwan without rushing. This route takes you from the buzzing capital through the rugged northeast coast, down the dramatic Pacific-facing east coast to Kenting's beaches, then back north via Tainan, Kaohsiung, Alishan, Sun Moon Lake, and Taichung. No corner of the island left out.
This itinerary works best by a mix of train, HSR, and occasional scooter rental. Book the Taipei–Hualien express well in advance — it sells out weeks ahead, especially on weekends.
Best eSIM for this trip: The 30-day unlimited plan ($60) is the stress-free choice for 14 days — no data counting, fast hotspot for hotel Wi-Fi backup. Alternatively the 15-day 10GB plan ($20) covers you end-to-end with one day to spare.
Day-by-Day Route
1
Taipei
Arrive Taipei — Settle In
Airport MRT to the city (35 min). Check in, recover from the flight with a walk around Da'an or Zhongzheng district. First meal: a bowl of beef noodle soup or scallion pancake from a street cart near your hotel. Early night to beat jet lag.
2
Taipei
National Palace Museum + Taipei 101
Morning at the National Palace Museum — world-class collection of Chinese imperial artefacts including the jade cabbage and meat-shaped stone. Lunch on Yongkang Street. Afternoon at Taipei 101 observatory (tickets sell out — book online). Evening at Ningxia Night Market.
3
Taipei
Beitou Hot Springs + Tamsui Old Street
MRT to Beitou for a morning soak in the naturally sulphuric hot spring pools — the public bath costs under $2. Walk up to Xinbeitou's historic hot spring museum. Afternoon train to Tamsui for the riverside old street, grilled squid, and a sunset over the estuary. Return to Taipei for the night.
4
Northeast Coast
Jiufen + Pingxi Sky Lanterns + Shifen
Full day on the northeast coast. Early bus to Jiufen before the crowds — the tea houses and gold-rush alleyways are magical in the quiet morning. Continue to Pingxi old street then release a sky lantern in Shifen. Return to Taipei or continue east towards Hualien overnight.
5
Hualien
Train to Hualien — Taroko Gorge Entrance
Morning Puyuma or Taroko Express from Taipei to Hualien (2 hrs — must book ahead). Afternoon in Taroko Gorge: Eternal Spring Shrine, Swallow Grotto, and Tunnel of Nine Turns. The gorge walls are some of the world's most dramatic marble formations. Stay in Hualien overnight.
6
Hualien
Deep Taroko — Zhuilu Old Trail
Zhuilu Old Trail is one of Taiwan's most spectacular hikes: a cliffside path carved into sheer marble 500m above the gorge floor. Permit required — apply online 30 days ahead. Half-day hike, then afternoon in Hualien city: Dongdamen Night Market for aboriginal mochi, wild boar sausage, and millet wine.
7
East Coast
Suhua Highway — Qingshui Cliffs + East Rift Valley
Hire a scooter or join a tour south along the Suhua Highway — 800m vertical cliffs falling straight into the Pacific Ocean. The Qingshui Cliffs are one of Asia's most dramatic coastal views. Continue south through the East Rift Valley, past organic farms and indigenous village markets, toward Taitung.
8
Kenting
Kenting National Park — Beaches + Coral
Bus or scooter south to Kenting — Taiwan's southern tip and only tropical national park. Spend the afternoon at Baisha Beach (white sand, calm water) or rent snorkel gear for the coral reefs at Nanwan. The Kenting Night Market runs every evening along the main strip. Stay in Kenting overnight.
9
Tainan
Travel to Tainan — Taiwan's Ancient Capital
Bus north to Tainan, Taiwan's oldest city with 400 years of history. Visit Anping Fort, the Dutch-built sea defence that launched Taiwan's colonial era. Walk the temple trail through Chihkan Towers and Sacrificial Rites Martial Temple. Tainan is the food capital — milkfish congee for breakfast, oyster vermicelli for lunch, shaved ice for dessert.
10
Kaohsiung
Kaohsiung — Lotus Pond + Cijin Island
Short train north to Kaohsiung, Taiwan's second city. MRT to Zuoying and walk to Lotus Pond — the dragon and tiger pagodas are iconic. Ferry across to Cijin Island (3 minutes, $0.30) for beachfront seafood. Sunset from the Kaohsiung Harbour waterfront. Stay overnight in Kaohsiung.
11
Alishan
Alishan Forest Railway — Cloud Sea Sunrise
Early train from Chiayi to Alishan (2.5 hrs on the narrow-gauge forest railway, book ahead). Rise at 4am for the Zhushan sunrise — the cloud sea below Alishan turns pink and gold as the sun clears the ridgeline. Walk the sacred cedar forest trails in the afternoon. Stay overnight at Alishan to catch the sunrise properly.
12
Sun Moon Lake
Travel to Sun Moon Lake — Bicycle Loop
Descend from Alishan to Chiayi then bus or train to Sun Moon Lake via Puli. Rent a bicycle and cycle the 33km lake loop — one of the most scenic rides in Asia. The water changes colour with the light; the view from Ci'en Pagoda at dusk is unmissable. Stay lakeside overnight.
13
Taichung
Taichung — Rainbow Village + Art District
Bus from Sun Moon Lake to Taichung (1 hr). Visit Rainbow Village — a WWII veteran's hand-painted neighbourhood saved from demolition by viral photos. Afternoon in the Calligraphy Greenway and Taichung Opera House (Toyo Ito's landmark building). Fengjia Night Market is Taiwan's largest — go hungry.
14
Taipei / Fly Home
HSR to Taipei — Departure
HSR from Taichung to Taipei takes 40 minutes — one of the world's most efficient train rides. If your flight is afternoon or evening, spend the morning at Ximending or Dihua Street for last-minute souvenir shopping. Nineties of pineapple cake and sesame nougat to bring home. Safe travels.
Recommended eSIM for 14 days

Practical Tips
- Book trains early — Taipei–Hualien Puyuma/Taroko Express sells out 2–3 weeks ahead on weekends. Book via TRA website immediately after planning your dates.
- Zhuilu Old Trail permit — Apply online at the Taroko National Park website at least 30 days before your visit. Free to apply, limited slots per day.
- Alishan Forest Railway — Book from Chiayi station in advance; the narrow-gauge seats are small and the train fills up fast. The 4am Zhushan shuttle inside the park runs from Alishan station.
- Scooter rental for east coast — You need an International Driving Permit. Most rental shops in Hualien accept it. Bring your IDP from home.
- Sun Moon Lake bus pass — A tourist day pass (~$8) covers unlimited buses including the gondola station at Jiuzu Scenic Area.
- EasyCard — One card works across MRT, buses, and convenience stores from Taipei to Kaohsiung. Top it up once at TPE and recharge at 7-Eleven.
